Curious Questions to Ask Yourself (or Retailers): Non-toxic Cabinets, Vanities, and Furniture

Want to make sure your existing or new home has non-toxic cabinets, vanities, and wood furniture?

It’s very common for cabinets, vanities, and furniture to be marketed as “solid wood,” but not be made entirely out of solid wood.

In this article, we run through some of the curious questions you can ask yourself before you buy cabinets, vanities, or furniture.

Curious Questions: How to Know if Your Cabinets, Vanities or Furniture is Entirely Solid Wood and Non-toxic.

  1. Is this made of 100% solid hardwood? Here’s a list of hardwoods commonly used.

2. Does that include the drawer boxes, backing, door and side panels and cabinet floor? Watch the video to find out where these parts are located.

3. Is the finish (stain and top coat, or paint) zero-VOC and have no HAPs? If you’re not sure what VOC and HAPs stand for, you can read more about them here.

Bonus Question: Do you use no-VOC glues? Many companies don’t disclose this or don’t know. While it’s an important element, if you’re buying non-toxic furniture, cabinets, and vanities, the amount of impact that the glues will have on your entire home is relatively minimal compared to the wood and finish.
